Abbas Akhavan Named Canada’s Official Representative at the 2026 Venice Biennale

Iranian-Canadian artist Abbas Akhavan has been selected as Canada’s official representative at the 61st Venice Biennale in 2026. The event, running from April 20 to November 24, 2026, is the world’s largest and most prestigious contemporary art exhibition.
The National Gallery of Canada was responsible for selecting the multidisciplinary artist.
Abbas Akhavan, 46, is widely known for his work in installation, drawing, video, sculpture, and performance art. Born in Tehran in 1977, Akhavan has lived in Canada for over 30 years. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in 2004 from Concordia University and his Master’s degree in 2006 from the University of British Columbia.
According to CBC News, Akhavan currently lives and works in Montreal.
