The Luis Ferreira Alves International Photography Competition 2025 is a biennial event dedicated to honoring the legacy of the esteemed Portuguese architectural photographer, Luis Ferreira Alves. This competition invites photographers worldwide to present their unique perspectives on architecture through compelling visual narratives.


Submission Guidelines

  • Photographic Series: Participants are required to submit a cohesive series of 5 to 7 photographs that effectively showcase a particular architectural work or a series of related structures.

  • Descriptive Text: Each submission must include an explanatory text of up to 2,000 characters. This narrative should articulate the conceptual and visual intentions behind the photographic series, providing insight into the depicted architectural subjects.

  • Technical Specifications:

    • File Format: Images should be in JPEG format.

    • Resolution: High-quality images with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, suitable for printing purposes.

    • Watermarks: Submissions must be free from digital watermarks, signatures, or logos to ensure anonymity during the judging process.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The competition is open to individuals globally, encompassing university students, researchers, and professionals in fields such as architecture, photography, and related disciplines.

  • Entries can be submitted either individually or as a group. In the case of group submissions, the team must register as a single competing entity.

  • Each participant or group is permitted to submit only one project.

  • Submissions must be original works that have not previously received awards in other competitions.


Judging Criteria:


Submissions will be evaluated based on the following aspects:

  1. Quality and Poetic Content of the Narrative: The depth and resonance of the story conveyed through the images and accompanying text.

  2. Technical Quality of the Photographs: The proficiency demonstrated in photographic techniques, including clarity, exposure, and composition.

  3. Artistic and Visual Quality: The aesthetic appeal and creativity exhibited in the photographs.

  4. Originality: The uniqueness and innovative approach of the submission in portraying architectural subjects.


Prizes

  • First Prize: €10,000

  • Second Prize: €4,000

  • Third Prize: A voucher worth €1,500 for photographic equipment, sponsored by Canon.


In addition to the monetary awards, winners will receive copies of the book “Luis Ferreira Alves in the Works of Eduardo Souto de Moura”. Their work will also be featured in an exhibition and published in an exclusive catalogue. Selected works will be preserved in the “Luis Ferreira Alves Photography Award” collection, contributing to a growing archive that celebrates architectural photography.

  • January 7, 2025: Opening date for submission entries.

  • April 25, 2025: Deadline for submissions (11:59 p.m. Portugal Time - Greenwich Mean Time).

  • May 2025: Announcement of the shortlisted projects.

  • June 2025: Winners will be announced.

  • September 2025: Awards ceremony, exhibition of the winning projects, and presentation of the competition catalogue.
